Yorkshire terrier

Yorkshire Terriers are often victims of theft.

Almost every time I look at Facebook I see another post about a dog who has been stolen and their owners are heartbroken. Why would anyone need to steal a dog? Well, the answers are sad and sometimes horrific.

Dogs are stolen for several reasons, but the most common are so they can be re-sold to unsuspecting people looking for a family pet, used for breeding so the puppies can be sold or used in illegal dog fighting rings. No matter the reason the dog and their family is devastated.

According to iHeartDogs.com, these are the most commonly stolen breeds.

Pit bull

Theft of pit bull terriers is common.

  • Yorkshire Terrier
  • Pomeranian
  • Maltese
  • Boston Terrier
  • French Bulldog
  • Chihuahua
  • Labradoodle
  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • German Shepherd
  • Labrador Retriever

This does not mean your beloved mutt cannot be stolen. Dog fighters are not really particular as to breed when they are looking for bait dogs (sorry for the harshness, but it’s the truth).

According to the American Kennel Club, dog thefts have risen over 30 percent in the last year.

So, what can you do to protect your faithful friend?

  • Microchip your dog. If your dog is ever found this will go a long way to bringing them home to you.
  • Do not leave your dog unattended whether it be in your car, at the park or even in your own backyard.
  • When out with your dog always have him/her on a leash. This will prevent your dog from roaming off into potential danger.

Dogs are a part of our family and we need to be aware that there are people in the world who only see dollar signs when looking at them. Be aware and keep your pets safe.
